Route 66 California Sign - Vintage Original
Stolen from around Victorville, California. John Steinbeck called it The Mother Route in The Grapes of Wrath. Route 66 began in 1926 linking Chicago to Los Angeles, and with it the hopes of legions of Americans escaping the dust bowl of the midwest for California dreams. It was a paved road to a better life. Route 66 came to an end in 1956, when President Eisenhower created the Interstate Highway system and the route itself became un-driveable in its entirety in 1985. It has spawned songs (Get Your Kicks on Route 66) and even the inspiration for the Disney movie Cars. Route 66 lives on as the ultimate American road trip.
We commissioned a few thieves to pilfer for us a Route 66 road sign from California and from another secret point along the route. The California sign is from just outside Victorville.
